TRAIL BUILDER & EXCAVATOR OPERATOR

Excavator Operator

In addition to being an accomplished MTB rider, coach and mentor, Nathan Rennie is also a mountain bike trail builder and excavator operator executing projects nationally and globally. Backed by years of being a professional mountain bike rider, Nathan brings a highly specialised, rider-focused perspective to earthmoving—shaping world-class trails, flow lines, and jump features that maximise speed, sustainability, and excitement. Nathan tends to ride mainly black trails now, but building fun, safe networks for all skill levels remains his primary mission.

Need an experienced trail builder?

Nathan Rennie is always interested in a new project. Whether it is fly in/fly out or local, Nathan is available for your trail building needs. With multiple tickets, licences and white card, Nathan is ready to go. If you need a reliable trail builder and excavator operator, contact us at The Victory Lab for Nathan's availability.

trail builds

Unlike standard civil construction which focuses on flat, straight foundations, MTB trail building requires a highly creative and technical approach. Operators use heavy equipment - most commonly 1.5 to 5-tonne mini excavators to:

  • Shape Features: Carve banked turns (berms), rollers, tabletops, and drop-offs that maximise rider momentum.
  • Manage Water: Cut "benched" trails and install drainage features to ensure rainwater naturally runs off without eroding the trail.
  • Integrate with Nature: Blend the trail into the existing topography, minimising environmental impact while creating an enjoyable user experience. Blend the trail into the existing topography, minimising environmental impact while creating an enjoyable user experience.

Nathan has had the honour of working for many trail building companies. Some of the projects Nathan has worked on:

  • 2018 Commonwealth Games MTB course, Gold Coast QLD
  • Mt Joyce MTB Trails, QLD
  • Mount Kembla Mountain Bike Park, Wollongong NSW
  • Kooralbyn MTB Park, QLD
  • Mr Leow's Tourism Resort, China
  • Lismore Pump Track, QLD
  • Thredbo MTB Park, NSW
  • Pump Track, Hobart, TAS
  • Launceston, TAS
  • Red Bull Projects
